The Operation and Maintenance Management Services were broken down into two phases: Phase 1A is comprised of two double curvature arch dams (Katse, 185m and Muela 55m high), 82 km of transfer and delivery tunnels and a 72 MW underground hydraulic generating station. Phase 1B consists of a 150 m high concrete graced rock fill dam, a diversion weir and 38 km of interconnecting tunnels to the Phase 1A reservoir. The Government of Lesotho added the hydroelectric component to the water transfer scheme to offset energy imports from the Republic of South Africa.
Training and capacity building programs conducted by MHI included operation and maintenance of hydro power generation stations and financial reporting systems.
